- Akira Kurosawa was a famed Japanese film director, producer, screenwriter and editor, who directed 31 films in his 57 -year career.

After working as a painter, Kurosawa entered the Japanese film industry in 1936 as an assistant director. He made his debut as a director in 1943, with the popular action film Sanshiro Sugata (Judo Saga). After World War II, in 1948, the critically acclaimed Drunken Angel, in which Kurosawa cast then-unknown actor Toshiro MIFUNE in a starring role, cemented the director's reputation as one of the most important young filmmakers in Japan.

Kurosawa sprang to international acclaim with Rashomon in 1950, when the film won the Golden Lion Prize at the Venice International Film Festival. During a time when the international film word was largely unaware of Japanese films, the success of Rashomon opened up the doors for other fellow directors such as Kenji MIZOGUCHI and Yasujiro OZU, as well as others to come in the future.

His obsessive preoccupation with details has often been talked about, shooting would be held up for a week to wait for a 'perfect' cloud; certain sets and props would be created even though they were for places not to be shot by the camera; he would ask residents to move away if he found that their houses were distracting the shooting; during script writing, he would already decide where the character was born, the family structure, the hobbies, the body size, the living environment, and even how he/she walks etc.

Some of his films are said to have influenced or inspired quite a number of Japanese and foreign filmmakers, such as Takeshi KITANO, Steven Spielberg, Martin Scorsese, George Lucas, John Woo and Zhang Yimou. It is also said that The Magnificient Seven (1977) by John Sturges was a remake of Seven Samurai, and George Lucas made Star Wars (1977) influenced by The Hidden Fortress.-

Akira Kurosawa,
23 March 1910 - 6 September 1998

dikatakan juga hasil kerja Akira Kurosawa sedikit sebanyak memberi influence kepada pengarah filem melayu seperti Tan Sri P Ramlee (Semerah Padi) dan Hussein Hanif (Istana Berdarah). whoah, hebat kan? lagi pasal Akira Kurosawa, klik di sini.
